Thoughts 💭 : The Balvenie 21 Year Old The Second Red Rose is a distinguished single malt Scotch whisky that pays homage to the rich history of Balvenie Castle. This expression has been matured for 21 years, beginning in American oak ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in Australian Shiraz wine casks, adding depth and complexity to the whisky.
The inspiration behind “The Second Red Rose” stems from the tale of Margaret Douglas, widow of the 8th Earl of Douglas, who resided in Balvenie Castle during the 15th century. According to legend, she was required to pay King James II an annual rent of a single red rose from the castle gardens as a symbolic gesture for her residence. This romantic story has been artfully captured in this expression, reflecting both the distillery’s heritage and its innovative spirit.
I personally thought this was an outstanding whisky with the only downside being the price being a little high for my liking.
