Thoughts 💭 : The Lochlea 6 Year Old Whisky celebrates six years of distilling at this independent Lowland distillery with a carefully crafted maturation. This release has been matured in a selection of six casks, specifically three first-fill bourbon barrels (Casks 132, 135, and 138) and three Oloroso sherry butts (Casks 250, 251, and 252). This combination balances the sweetness and vanilla-rich notes of bourbon casks with the rich, dried fruit and spice influence of Oloroso sherry.
How does this compare to its younger 5 year old sibling? Well, this one has sweeter and maltier flavours. The 5 year old got a PX influence, which really pushed on rich chocolate and fruit cake flavours, giving it a classic sherried feel.
The 6-year-old has focused on a balance between Oloroso and bourbon, and it’s made the whisky more interesting because it’s offered diversity rather than just a slightly older version of the same whisky.
Sláinte!
