Thoughts 💭 :  Kingsbarns Coaltown Ex-Peated Cask is a unique expression from the Fife-based distillery, matured exclusively in casks that previously held peated whisky. This maturation imparts a delicate, soft smokiness that weaves through the spirit, complementing Kingsbarns’ signature light and fruity style. By ageing their whisky in these ex-peated casks, Kingsbarns creates a beautifully balanced dram that integrates subtle smoky undertones with sweeter and fruitier notes.

The name “Coaltown” pays homage to Coaltown of Wemyss, a historic mining village near Wemyss Castle, the ancestral seat of the Wemyss family. The Wemyss family, deeply rooted in Fife and with a long-standing connection to whisky, founded Kingsbarns Distillery to continue their legacy of craftsmanship. Kingsbarns Coaltown was crafted to embody this heritage and reflect the region’s rich history.

This expression successfully combines the distillery’s modern approach with a nod to the past, creating a whisky that captures the essence of the Wemyss family’s whisky-making tradition while incorporating the unique influence of ex-peated cask maturation. A refined and thoughtful addition to the Kingsbarns range, it stands out for its subtle smokiness and the story behind its creation.
