Recently GlenAllachie released their new Virgin Oak Series additions which featured a few interesting finishes including Hungarian virgin oak which was a first in the series. All 3 whiskies recently released in the series were finished in a type of virgin oak and aged 7, 8 and 10 years respectively.
Which of them is best you may ask?

GlenAllachie 7 Year Old Hungarian Virgin Oak

This is a new virgin oak for the distillery and one of the worlds first whiskies finished in Hungarian virgin oak.
The flavour profile on this particular whisky expression is a complex one but largely sweet, fruity and spicy with licks of chocolate throughout.

GlenAllachie 8 year old Scottish Virgin Oak

This isn’t the first scottish virgin oak release from the distillery and this one is much younger than their previous.
This one is sweet and fruity and a little bit malty, with an interesting tannic taste throughout.

GlenAllachie 10 Year Old Spanish Virgin Oak Finish

A full 2 years younger than their previous release in the oak, this has however not taken away from the whisky.
This one has a flavour profile more synonymous with the distillery with lashings of chocolate caramel and cinnamon spice. It may not have held sherry but there’s something that has to be said about Spanish oak for still giving the sherry like flavours to the liquid.

Which of them is best?

That all depends on what you prefer from your whisky. In terms of flavour and complexity the Spanish Virgin Oak Finish is number one for me. However in terms of being something different and interesting the Hungarian Virgin Oak is the winner.
So it depends on if you want something similar to what you would normally get from the distillery or if you want something different and interesting.
From a personal perspective I would rate them in the following order:
1. Spanish Virgin Oak Finish
2. Hungarian Virgin Oak
3. Scottish Virgin Oak
