🖍 Natural Colour
Colour 🌈 : Straw
Nose👃🏼 : Very fruity, pear drops, pineapple, stone fruits, orange peel and ginger
Taste 👅 : Sweet toasted barley, honey, fruit cocktail, stone fruits, ripe pear, honey and ginger spice
Finish 🏁 : Orange marmalade and dry oak
Thoughts 💭 : Our Barley is aptly named as barley certainly comes through in the flavour. Sitting as the core release for the distillery it is matured in ex-Oloroso casks, ex-bourbon casks and STR barriques. There’s an oily mouthfeel to it and it’s brimming with sweet fruits balanced by bittersweet notes of marmalade. It’s not hugely dissimilar to its Cask Strength brother but the sherry notes are too subtle to be found in this one and the notes aren’t quite as explosive.
In all it’s a nice whisky, admittedly I wasn’t a big fan to begin with as I’m not hugely into bitter fan but it’s really grown on me and the bitterness does give a good contrast to the sweet. I am hoping that one day we’ll see an 8/12 year old having either 10% of it’s time matured in ex-bourbon and 90% in sherry or 90% ex-bourbon and 10% Sherry octave so we have more enhanced Sherry flavours. Imagine that bitter orange sweetened up by the Sherry mixing with the chocolatey flavours and bringing a chocolate orange flavour? Make it happen Lochlea!
Sláinte!
